Dahut
The
end of the XIX century is a pivotal period for the yachting
development. Gustave
Caillebotte, painter and naval architect has been distinguished himself
by his
quasi-scientific quest of performance. During this period, In regatta,
two different
kind of design are confronted : the British fin-keel and the American
centerboard. Over his designs, Caillebotte succeed to synthesize those
two
architectural points of view. Moderated beam and external lead will
give birth
to splendid hull, among them the racing boat from the 30m2 class of the
Cercle de voile de Paris. Two replica of
them have been rebuild:: The Roastbeef launched in 1996 (Sequana non profit organization) and the
Lezard launched in 1997 (Association
européenne du
Lézard).
In
1892, Caillebotte draw the Dahut that can be considerate as his chef
d’oeuvre.
Launched in 1894, the same year the boat race in Bretagne and in
Normandie with
Caillebotte as skipper: her won 11 of the 14 race in which he took
part..
A replica of this fabulous cutter would be a
splendid
ambassador of this French naval architecture’s period .
